Childhood

They used to be my favorite "band" when I was a kid.

I remember my best friend and I used to fight over who got to marry Nick Carter when we were older. If we'd known he'd grow up to punch Paris Hilton in the face (allegedly), I think we'd have spent a lot more time fighting over who got to marry AJ. Or not, he, after all, ended up in rehab. Definitely not Howie...he was always too unnatractive for us to bother with. And neither of us were Christian enough to want either of the Kentuckyans, Brian and Kevin. Maybe we'd have fought over *NSYNC, and which of them we'd marry. But I never went in for the Justin or JC cults, thinking them irritating, and the Joey and Chris cults just didn't exist. I like Lance, but he grew up to be gay...

My childhood is being destroyed by the people who created it. The Spice Girls are all adults, with kids even! Who ever thought that would happen? Certainly not my seven 'til ten year old self. Lance Bass came out last summer - that would have been unfathomable to my twelve year old best friends and I. Nick Carter hitting Paris Hilton? Well, even I want to hit her sometimes, but he actually did! That's not right.

The other night, I was walking to my dorm, and someone was playing "I Want It That Way", which is why I picked it as the song for this blog. I was astounded to realize that I still knew all the lyrics, and even most of the dance moves. I spent the rest of the night with a friend, looking up music videos from the 90's, attempting to relive my childhood. It didn't quite work. We're going to throw a Millenium party this New Year's, because neither of us had one in 1999.

The more stuff from the 90's that I watch on YouTube, the more I miss my childhood.

I remember waking up at 6 AM to watch the Pink Panther and Sailor Moon, and now it's all anyone can do to get me up by noon.

My friends and I used to fight over which Sailor Scout was the best. I always said Mars or Jupiter. They always said Moon or Venus. One thing we all agreed on: if Darien/Tuxedo Mask were real, he'd be cute.

I remember sitting around a picnic table with my friends, talking about God and the universe. When that failed, we devolved into arguments about which Spice Girl was the best. I liked Scary and Ginger. They were the most interesting. Everyone else liked Posh and Baby. They bored me.

Spiceworld was a god awful movie, but their music really wasn't all that bad. The harmonies and such were pretty.

When we got a little older and my group changed slightly, we became much more interested in boys, and started arguing about which boy band boy was the prettiest, and who we had a special claim to. Some friendships even became really rocky over it. Everyone wanted either Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Justin Timberlake, or JC Chasez. It got to be bitter warfare, haha. But all of us knew it would never work out.

Then there were the solo female vocalists: Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. It took Jessica Simpson rather longer to get with the program and make it herself.

And then Eminem made his debut. And permanently ruined music for all of us by making rap popular. Damn it.

Music went on in a status quo until Avril Lavigne hit the scene, stealing the popular stage and giving us a refreshing difference from the other girl acts out there. Her cute guitarist was a plus, too.

And then there were all those other acts which I've managed to keep my love for, despite the intervening years: Savage Garden, No Doubt, Sarah McLachlan, the Goo Goo Dolls...

hm. Kids these days. They don't know what they're missing. My childhood was so...childish. But in a non-childish way. Like Pinky and the Brain, there was something for everyone, and kids and their older sibs could agree on media.

I miss it.

About Me

I'm just an average 19 year-old girl from California, trying to figure out my place in the world. Madness and mayhem prevail in my existence as I navigate university life and try to figure out just what I want from myself. It's an interesting adventure. Want to know anything about me, just ask.

The Devil's Rose

Because I'm always curious where people get their screennames from, here's why mine's 'devils-rose': one of my favorite songs is called "Rose in the Devil's Garden" by Tiger Army. That's the main reason, that and my life can be quite hellish. So it just kind of worked for me.

The Least You Need to Know

I am: crazy; nineteen; female; random; deeply loyal to my friends; always looking to make more friends; something of a warrior, when the situation calls for it; good in emergencies; until they're over; temperamental; creative, artistic, and social; escaping an emotionally abusive childhood; determined to move to Europe; in a major university; studying Linguistics, Japanese, German, and Spanish; and...I don't know, lots of things. :D

Likes/Dislikes

I like: music, concerts, road trips, food, friendship, laughter, frolicking, walking in nature, writing novels and short stories, reading fiction - mostly fantasy, dancing in the rain, late nights, sleeping in, thunderstorms, ogling cute boys, playing at being a pirate, outrunning time, feeling infinite.
~*~
I dislike: homework, waking up early, hot weather, people with no sense of humor, boredom, depression, being at home with my family.
